As a community, we are devastated by and condemn the racist violence taking place across the country.
We understand that many people in our society feel let down by the systems meant to support and protect us. However, this does not justify hate towards others who may be different from us, hold different beliefs, have different skin colours, or other differences we may not immediately understand. This unrest is causing already vulnerable individuals to feel even more fearful, anxious, and afraid to leave their homes.
Feelings of acceptance and belonging help our members to thrive and overcome the challenges of living with a brain injury. We know by experience that communities excel when diverse people come together, accept each other’s differences, and learn from one another.
We grieve the lives of the three children lost in the violent attack in Southport and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends. We are saddened that this tragedy is being used as an excuse to incite more hate and violence.
As we navigate these challenging times, let us commit to fostering a culture of understanding and empathy, where every individual feels safe, valued, and respected. As seen last night with the counter protests, together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society.
