Statement of Intent

At Headway East London our vision is that brain injury survivors experience a world that is accessible to them, and where their contributions are valued and celebrated. Brain injury does not discriminate according to race or identity, and neither do we.

Our culture is one of collaboration, because we know that together we create a richer, more diverse and complete community based on shared understanding and support.

This is not always easy, and we recognise that we don’t always have the language, tools or experience to fully recognise the impact of our actions or words, particularly on people of colour.

We make a commitment to continue learning and working together to eradicate racism both within our organisation and those that we partner with. Through this work, we pledge to drive forward change towards a world where everyone’s contributions are valued and celebrated regardless of race, gender, disability or identity.

As an organisation we state the following intentions:

  • To have an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) working group chaired by our CEO to drive forward this issue.
  • To create a space for staff, volunteers and members to discuss issues relating to EDI on a regular basis.
  • To develop an action plan for the year outlining key activities to monitor progress and hold ourselves accountable for our work in this area.
  • To include EDI in all staff meetings and at board meetings at least twice a year.
  • To provide training to all staff on a regular basis, and as part of induction, to ensure shared understanding around these issues.
  • To have zero tolerance to racism and microaggressions, to call these out when we see them and to have clear consequences for those that do not adhere.
  • To only partner with organisations that demonstrate the same commitment to EDI as ourselves.
  • To develop a culture of anti-racism, actively seeking opportunities to better understand and embrace the many cultures represented within the organisation.
  • To ensure that our recruitment practices are inclusive and that we recruit only for talent; providing employment opportunities for everyone, regardless of race or any other protected characteristics identified in the Equalities Act 2010.
  • To ensure that our policies and procedures reflect our commitment to EDI.
