“Make It Happen” is all about looking to the future: we’ve achieved some amazing things over the last difficult year, and as the country opens up again we want to focus on what’s next for Headway East London. With a new Chief Executive and renewed energy, we’re positive about what’s to come, but we need help (and money) to make it happen!

With lockdown lifting and the world beginning to open up again, we are looking to resume paused projects and make exciting plans for 2021 and beyond. The coming months will see the launch of a new art exhibition at Shoreditch’s Autograph Gallery, alongside a return to the Royal London Hospital as part of an Early Intervention project to support people who are newly injured, and their loved ones. With a hefty fundraising target of £5000 a week and many fundraising events still cancelled, donations from the ‘Make It Happen’ campaign will ease the financial burden as Headway East London embarks on this exciting next chapter.

When the pandemic changed all of our lives in March 2020, we knew the charity would have to transform its services to ensure members remained comforted, inspired and connected. Brain injury survivors are all too familiar with the emotional strain of social isolation and what it does to our mental and physical health. Headway East London’s hybrid model of online, in-person and postal care giving provides practical support and therapies, nurtures meaningful relationships and encourages self-expression, reflection and even moments of joy.

Member Sandra has been coming to Headway’s Day Service for 11 years and during the pandemic engaged with our therapy service, dance groups, catch up Zooms and online art sessions: Being able to be with people every day even through all this has truly saved my life after I’ve lost a lot. I just want to carry on all together and keep making art and dancing.

Keen to build upon more than two decades work, is our brand-new Chief Executive Anna McEwen who joined the organisation in March: “It is more important than ever for us to be providing critical and ongoing support to survivors of brain injury many of whom experienced isolation long before Covid hit. The past year has been hard for everyone, but even more so for our members for whom we’ve provided a life line. We’re excited to be able to start planning new services and events giving our members the opportunity to share their talents and get back out in our local community!”

To support the campaign a team of survivors, staff and volunteers will running a dance-athon at the charity’s day centre from Monday 10th May to celebrate reopening after lockdown. Taking inspiration from the 70s Soul Train phenomenon, they are looking to boogie their way to “1k in May”. We will be recording their progress onsite, and inviting members from their community-based services across 13 London boroughs to get involved from home. You can donate directly to their challenge here!
